I recently had the opportunity to speak to a vibrant group of young people attending the Hong Kong University (HKU) Toastmasters. HKU is a terrific place, where young people from all over the planet congregate to learn and develop. I made mention, in my keynote address to the group, that if we circumvented HKU campus with a human chain of HKU students, no-one would have exactly the same facial features, or, surprising at it may seems, even the hair colour! Yet we humans love to categorize each other using broad terms: yellow, black, white etc. The students were very engaging as a sample of feedback comments shows:
“An emotionally convincing speech – I can clearly relate to the present scenario of the harsh criticism of children, teens and humans of all ages – all because of labeling our mental statuses. Somehow I just wish the word could be more ‘normal’ for once! Knithiga ~ “Wonderful and Inspiring” Lillian Yan ~ “Very insightful talk. Dr Wright’s abilities as a great speaker were on display” Lee Kyung Min 4/4/2014 ~”Inspiring and informative speech. Definitely raised the awareness of this issue. Thank you for doing this” Armani Leung ~ “Very enlightening. I was really not aware of the problem with mental diagnoses of young children. It will change the way I treat people in the future. I will now also treat my younger brother differently!” Chen Jinhao HKU Toastmasters, HKU, 4th April, 2014.
